The Steward’s Commission
“Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” (1Corinthians 4:1-2)
A Steward is a person who is faithfully responsible for something that is not his own. Stewardship in The 17:23 Initiative is a high calling. These are the ones who are set aside by the Holy Spirit to be a Steward over the Lord’s prayer for unity. The Steward over The Treasure will take responsibility for the devotional – including the coin, the tent fold and the Bible memory card.
Every Steward must start as an Apprentice Watchman – completing the 30 day devotion assignment and carrying the coin with him for that time. The Watchman then has the opportunity to become a Steward by underwriting the cost of The Treasure and entering into the Steward‘s Covenant.
The Steward’s first responsibility is to ask God to show him the Apprentice Watchman he is to entrust with The Treasure. Then, when directed by the Holy Spirit, the Steward will place The Treasure in the care of that Apprentice until he completes it and becomes a Watchman.
Having entrusted The Treasure, the Steward will immediately report to the office of The 17:23 Initiative the registration number of The Treasure, contact information of the new Apprentice Watchman and date entrusted. At that time a letter of encouragement will go out from the Office to the Apprentice Watchman. This is best done via email.
The Steward will pray for this Apprentice Watchman every day – that the devotion would have its intended effect in his heart. The Steward will have a copy of the devotional so he and the Apprentice Watchman will be able to interact with each other as the Apprentice Watchman goes through the devotionals in The Treasure.
The Office will also send the Apprentice a welcome letter as he/she begins, an encouragement email at the 15th day, and a congratulations letter on the 30th day.
The Steward is encouraged to contact the Apprentice Watchman every week using the “Steward’s Encouragements” that can be found below. During the final week, the Steward will encourage the Apprentice Watchman to pass The Treasure on to another person – that they might also become an Apprentice Watchman. If the Apprentice Watchman declines to pass The Treasure on, the Steward retrieves it and, after its contents are replenished, will entrust it to another Apprentice Watchman. This keeps each copy of The Treasure in circulation – maximizing the investment made in it. It also creates opportunities for connection and fellowship across the Body of Christ.
